The Luckiest Year Ever?
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. My closest ones and my 16 months old daughter have made sure of that. But also extreme things just keep on happening in my life. 2018 was one of the happiest and also toughest year’s ever.
A movie called Molly’s Game has a mind-shaking scene in the beginning that put me thinking I have been as lucky and unfortunate as the main character. 1st of March was a cold but beautiful day in Jochberg, Austria. My husband stayed in the hotel with our little 6 months old Isabel while I went to enjoy winter sports that I have done since 2005. All was great until the final ride that happened after the ski lifts were closed. I was snowboarding down the hill when the ski slope unexpectwdly diverged and I drove off piste. I fell on my back and had some difficulties to breathe but then the adrenaline kept me going. There was nobody who saw me falling. I went to a hospital where I was informed that I had broken my 8th thoracic vertebra of the spine and the situation is unstable. I let you imagine how my following months looked like but I am happily recovered now.
How weird that the two worst mountain accidents in my life have both happened in Austria, in Saalbach (1998) and Jochberg (2018). I can only say that too many ski slopes are missing safety boarders and proper signs there. This time I really was careful but still it did not help me to arrive home safely… Or is the honest truth that I can not blame anyone and anything else but myself and try to do all not to face accidents in the future? …
Today, I am looking back to it as a horrible experience, am grateful for being able to walk and that I have so lovely family. Wish you all a wonderful and lucky new year ahead!
